Making the Possibility of Positive Parenting a Daily Reality for YOU ...

Our Mission

The Institute of Advanced Parentology (IAP) is a catalyst for social transformation. Our mission is to advance the practice of parenting .

Our Vision

IAP works to create a world in which:

  • Parenting is enjoyable, meaningful and fulfiling
  • Children are treated with respect and dignity
  • Children develop good character as well as healthy personality and fully actualize their unique potentials within an encouraging and growth engendering home environment

What We Do

We set out to fulfill our mission through the following:

  • Courses. We provide advanced parenting courses for parents as well as training and certification programmes for professionals such as family life educators, coaches and counsellors who share our vision and wish to incorporate the theories and practices of Advanced Parentology into their work.
  • Consultation and Coaching . We help parents grow to become more competent in handling the inherent challenges of parenting through one-to-one coaching and consultation services.
  • Campaigns. As a catalyst for social transformation, IAP initiates and supports campaigns aimed at producing long term change that can enhance the quality of parenting practices and family lives.

What Sets Us Apart

The work at IAP is directed at generating deep and sustainable change by employing the best practices, principles and technologies in adult learning.  Our approach is unique in that:

  • Advanced Parentology adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to parenting. It draws on wisdom from various disciplines, thereby enabling parents to approach parenting from multiple perspectives.  This results in a more holistic and comprehensive understanding of key aspects of raising children as well as facilitates the identification of ‘blind spots’ and ‘groupthink’ which may not be evident in conventional approaches to parent education.
  • Advanced Parentology is principle-based . It is NOT based on a certain expert’s beliefs or opinions on how one should parent.  We invite parents to align their decisions and actions with universal principles that are enduring, self-evident and readily validated their personal experience.
  • Our educational programmes are non-prescriptive.  Rather than providing ready solutions or quick-fixes to common parenting challenges, we seek to help parents uncover their own solutions by honouring their creativity, resourcefulness, personal values and beliefs.  Parents are guided to examine their own thinking within a safe setting that enables them to uncover new insights into the true nature of the problems or challenges they face.  These insights empower them to make conscious choices and take new actions towards creating their desired parenting experience.

Faculty Members

  Kenny Toh, Founder and Principal

IAP is founded in December 2008 by Kenny Toh - a passionate father, a professional coach, a corporate trainer, and a prolific writer.   Born in Malaysia and educated in Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, he currently resides in Singapore with his wife and two children. He lives a life of passion and purpose by helping people experience fuller lives through coaching, delivering public talks and seminars, and his writings.

Kenny was previously a manager with Accenture, a global technology and management consulting company.  He specialised in financial and performance management in the banking industry, and had advised several local and foreign banks in a range of areas including post-merger integration, organizational transformation, and value-based management.  In 2002, he left the corporate sector to spend more time with his family and pursue his passion for personal development.  Since then, he had started several enterprises, including Gone Fishing cafe which subsequently earned him the Spirit of Enterprise 2006 Award - an annual award that honors inspiring entrepreneurs in Singapore.

The passion for personal development has led him to the field of professional coaching in 2003.  Kenny is trained and certified in Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) and skilled in a diverse range of coaching methodologies. He is also the founder of The Coaching Academy and a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF).  As an experienced coach, he has personally worked with individuals from various walks of life, helping CEO’s, senior executives, managers, business professionals, consultants, entrepreneurs, artists, teachers as well as parents achieve greater success, joy, meaning and fulfillment in their personal and professional lives. Kenny has also trained leaders at several FORTUNE 500 companies including AES, AMD, Abbott Laboratories and SUN Microsystems on essential leadership skills such as coaching, communication, performance management, delegation, decision making, problems solving, conflict resolution and team building.

Kenny first ventured into parent education following the establishment of the International Network for Parents as Coaches (INPaC) in 2005. He is a leading advocate for Parents-as-Coaches in Singapore – an approach for bringing out the best in children that integrates the heart of parenting with the discipline of coaching.  As a well sought after speaker, he has been invited to speak at public parenting seminars such as Positive Parenting Congress (2009), Great Parenting Seminar (2007), and Joyful Parenting Conference (2006) as well as private audiences at government organizations, corporate institutions, and a broad spectrum of educational institutions including Nanyang Technological University, National Junior College, and various secondary, primary and pre-schools.  His insights and writings on parenting-related topics have been featured in publications such as Straits Time’s Mind Your Body, Readers’ Digest Asia, Young Parents, Today’s Parents, Family Magazine, Mother and Baby, and Young Families. Kenny is also the author of A Concise Guide to the NEW RULE for Positive Parenting

Our Graduates

  Michelle Lim-Yan, Certified IAP Coach

Michelle has had twelve years’ experience as a Human Resources practitioner in the Banking & Finance industry.  She was a HR Business Partner in the Wealth Management group of UBS Singapore.   She has worked with bankers, senior team managers, investment specialists, and employees in banking operations on very diverse and challenging issues relating to management of teams, performance, change, and one’s career.

Having left her job in 2009 to spend more time with her young children, Michelle draws from personal experience a deep appreciation of the challenges and dilemmas of both working and stay-home mothers. A strong advocate of active parenting and family values, she encourages both fathers and mothers to be actively engaged in the parenting journey. She believes the marriage is the cornerstone of parenting and when husbands and wives connect, support and believe in each other, the parenting journey and the whole family is furthered enriched.

Michelle shares the journey of parenting with her husband, Kevin, a certified behavioural and career consultant. They have two young children whose boundless energy is a source of wonder, a constant teacher of patience, and a challenge of (obsolete!) assumptions and knowledge they hold as parents.

Michelle is also Asia's first Parenting Coach certified by the Institute of Advanced Parentology (IAP) and is presently an associate with IAP.

 Kevin Chan, Certified IAP Coach

Kevin graduated from Chinese University (Bsc) in 1988 and has served as a pastor at Hong Kong Church of Christ for 18 years.  Since leaving the role of a pastor to begin the second half of his life in the commercial sector, he has worked as a training manager with Whole Person Development Institute and recruitment manager with Prudential.

Kevin is a man of passion with a rich experience in counseling from his pastoring years.  He has also received substantive training in coaching, and is a certified business coach (WABC), a certified behavioral consultant (CBC), and a certified parenting coach (IAP).

At present, Kevin is the founding director of Coaching Explorum, a Hong Kong-based coaching company that specialises in providing coaching services in the areas of career, finance career development, parenting and marriage.  He seeks to help people realise their dreams by integrating commercially effective ways with Biblical values and teaching..

Our Associates

  Jason Ng

Jason started his first career with IBM upon graduation from NUS in 1990.  He has worked in various parts of the world including Russia, China, Malaysia and Indonesia.  In 2005, he decided to return to Singapore so as to spend more time with his family and bond with his children.

Since January 2006, Jason has been a Family Life Educator with Families For Tomorrow Services, an MCYS-appointed School Family Education (SFE) service provider which conducts family education programmes at primary schools, secondary schools and junior colleges.  As a well sought after speaker, Jason has conducted talks and workshops to thousands of parents, teachers and students on a wide range of topics including parent-child relationship management, character education, maximising of children’s potential, social and emotional learning for teenagers, multiple intelligences of children, and computer gaming addiction.

Jason’s forte is on the handling and prevention of computer gaming addiction - a phenomenon that is pervasive in today’s society.  He is currently working on publishing his book “Conquering Computer Hours, Restoring Relationships.”  This book is a powerful account of his coaching sessions with parents whose children had gone beyond parental control in their computer hours.

Jason is happily married to Emelyn Ho, a teacher with an immense passion for the Chinese language, with whom he shares the joy of raising two lovely children - Faith and Caleb.

 John Ooi

John Ooi has been married for 25 years (yes, with all its attendant family disagreements and quarrels) and has raised six children (between the ages of 8 and 21 presently).  Shortly after marriage, he and his wife Joann began sharing their experiences of relationship, courtship, dating, marriage, etc, with teenagers and youth.  As the six children came along, more and more often his audiences were parents rather than teens.  From the sharing came two books that John wrote – Learning to Love: Questions and Answers on Human Sexuality for Teenagers (this has also been translated into Filipino), and Balancing Work and Family … And Enjoying It.  Over the last two decades, John has spoken to thousands of youth and hundreds of parents, in small discussion groups and at large national and international conferences.  He has seen and been touched by many families that love and that struggle at the same time.  He now runs his own educational company, Touching Lives Pte Ltd, and regularly shares his tried and tested views and experiences with parents and youth on a variety of topics.
